Comment: What we got compared to what we need

So COP26 is coming to an end this weekend and it has pretty much been the dismal failure many of us predicted it would be, from little or no agreement between those nations that attended, the leading polluters not attending COP26 made agreement impossible and may well go down in the future as a failure of historic proportions. The Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley said  “If our existence is to mean anything, then we must act in the interest of all of our people who are dependent on us,” well they acted in the interests of no one and those who will suffer the most are the young activists who have called out the leaders this week with refreshing honesty.

Another one who appeared to spend the fortnight in desperation, serving the interests of no one but herself was First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, if she achieved anything at all the last two weeks it was that she became the political Queen of the selfie, she achieved groupie status that would have impressed the Rolling Stones didn’t she. From Biden to Merkel to Thunberg Sturgeon got a selfie with the lot of them. The I reported that Scotland and Sturgeon

had failed to join a coalition of countries setting targets for phasing out oil and gas production, prompting accusations that Nicola Sturgeon is offering little more than “fine rhetoric” on tackling climate change.

Now while I can honestly say that not one single country will abandon Oil and Gas while there is money to be made, rich people to appease, and little or no investment in saving the planet, Sturgeon could have shown honesty but just played the game like the rest of them, maybe even better when you consider the selfie bombs from her Twitter account. Leading up to COP26 NICOLA Sturgeon said her priority at the COP26 summit “will be showing Scotland can lead by example on the climate, rather than promoting Scottish independence to world leaders”. Just all the same crap since 2014 when she became leader of the devolutionist SNP.

With Buffoon Boris Johnson showing his corruptness in all of it’s glory, with the Tory Government sticking it to us all in the front and showing the true depths they are willing to go to to look after their own there was an opportunity to really highlight the urgent need for independence, for Scotland to escape this waking nightmare that is the political union with the rest of the United Kingdom but what did we get, we got the SNP bigging up the fact that comfy slippers MP Pete Wishart wrote a letter to the Police taking credit for Open Democracy’s money for peerage scandal but the new SNP have no shame while comfy slippers is not even self-aware.

We were reminded by an Alba member on social media  of when the House of Commons Petitions Office admitted in March 2019 that the Treaty of Union is something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

We can’t accept your petition because this would be a decision for the people of Scotland and not the UK Government or Parliament. You might like to sign this petition calling for a referendum on Scottish Independence instead:

I was reminded of the Sunday Mail headline from June 2016 when Sturgeon said Scotland was going Nowhere in relation to the EU, what she really meant was Scotland was going Nowhere in relation to the UK.

So what we got from COP26 and Sturgeon was abject failure, what we will get next year will be more of her gender debate with a calendar from LGBTQIA+Awareness which I don’t even know what any of it even means any more, I have given up on pronouns for the sake of my health. What we got this last two weeks compared to what we need is clear for any right minded person to see, we need an independence campaign that is clear in stating that the next General Election, or Holyrood Election, will be a plebiscite election on the issue of Scottish Independence, nothing less will do, or is any longer acceptable.

  1. Again ” like” does not register for me. Don’t know what’s wrong but I fully agree with your article. Thank you.

Nicola Sturgeon is a self-obsessed, self-promoting, self-identifying, selfie-addicted, self-ish individual. The only ‘self’ she has done nothing to progress is the determination variety.

I don’t think we need a plebiscite election – we have umpteen mandates already. What we need is for the Scottish political representatives to act on these. Then a confirmatory referendum with an UN approved franchise, rules and observers. See the proposed approach from the SSRG:

    A Referendum Fail

She is certainly self-promoting that is for sure. There would need to be some kind of confirmatory referendum on any deal with the UK if we were to leave but I think sadly we will go down the referendum route as Sturgeon seems married to it but it won’t be for years as she doesn’t have the she/they’s to take on Johnson.

Selfie stick Sturgeon. Is there a camera she hasn’t stood in front of? I thought we’d seen it all with the Dear Leader’s bus during the election – what a narcissist!

“will be showing Scotland can lead by example on the climate, rather than promoting Scottish independence to world leaders”.

Since energy is reserved to Westminster the only way Scotland can lead by example IS by being in independent country.

Bruce I’ve an article idea forming in my brain. Tris wants MNR to be neutral so I’d not submit to him. Would you be willing to consider it? I’d want to be published as panda paws though, not under my real name.

    • Panda

Of course just send it and I will post it. I’ll approve the comments and you reply to them if ok.

Yeah energy is reserved so the best Sturgeon can really do is use planning legislation and a lot of bluster which is all so very sad and this last two weeks just shows we are a colony and Sturgeon as much the Governor General than Jack is.

We know we are in trouble when the first minister is the darling and the lovee of the Guardian and vogue magazine. She is more interested that a future role as a UN ambassador on the environment than pushing the cause of independence.

We can’t wait until the next GE or Scottish Election. The people of Scotland are suffering now and it will only get worse. Action is needed now.

    • Lizzy

I don’t disagree with your sentiment but I’m not sure what else we can do unless someone declared UDI which won’t happen or Sturgeon calls an early election, also won’t happen so we are stuck between a rock and a hard place just now.

This is completely OT but I’ve put together a leaflet based on the Wanted For Treason leaflet distributed in the US in 1961 after the Bay of Pigs it was distributed by anti Castro/Kennedy activists you can see a copy here https://www.dropbox.com/s/8zzbawx82s09sqp/300-wanted-for-treason-best.jpg?dl=0
My idea is to make a similar leaflet albeit not identical and run off a few copies and pin them in various places in my area the problem is I’m not very good with words so I’m hoping someone can help me edit it
    You can view it here

If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated

  7. Black Rab says:

COP26 was always bound to fail as capitalism would literally have to be reversed to make any meaningful change to reversing planetary ruination.
Sturgeon mediating her popularity through vacuous selfies as an eco-friendly fan girl is embarrassing. Consider her capitulation in hiding the Saltires at Bute House and unable or unwilling to find a place at the COP26 discussion table. Maybe it’s just as well as she would have sold Scottish Lochs for toxic waste dumping to the oil polluters.
    Johnson…..Sturgeon……..UK leaders………English electorate…….Scottish electorate…… We’re doomed.
