Energy – Scotland the Great Fuel Swindle

Scotland could control and benefit from 96% of the UK’s oil production, but we don’t. Scotland could control and benefit from 63% of the UK’s natural gas production, but we don’t. Scotland could control and benefit from 25% of the UK’s renewable energy production, but we don’t. Scotland could control and benefit from 90% hydro power, but we don’t. Getting the picture!

Winter’s coming, the clocks are about to go back and there’s been a cold chill in the air. That’s normally just part of nature’s cycle. I’m one of those folks who happen to enjoy our seasons and for whom a perpetual summer sun has no allure.

This year though with fuel costs going through the roof, it’s not a matter of whether you share that view but whether you can keep warm, maintain dignity or even life itself. It’s not just whether you can heat or eat, but wash the kids’ clothes, keep the phone charged for work or even keep the dialysis machine. These aren’t luxuries but necessities. (Kenny MacAskill Alba MP)

The Alba Party proposed a doubling this coming year of the winter fuel payment offering 1 million Scottish pensioners, and households with severely disabled children, increased payments of between £100 and £300 to help with heating as a starting point. Alba also proposes a public share in all of the offshore wind licenses issued in Scottish waters, the formation of a public energy
company so that Scots can have access to clean, green and affordable electricity.

The SNP promised a publicly owned energy company using Scotland’s vast energy resources to be sold on at cost to the people of Scotland.

SNP members were enthusiastic, the public were enthusiastic, however this policy then became a different policy where efforts were being “refocused” on a public energy agency. The Scottish SNP Government said the agency would “coordinate and accelerate” the delivery of heat and energy efficiency work as well as “informing and educating” the public on required changes. If that wasn’t bad enough, we then had the great renewable swindle where our renewables were sold for £700 million whereas New York City made $4.26 BILLION DOLLARS from just 6 licenses. In relation to the Scottish auction the respected think tank Common Weal says it is “arguably the greatest economic failure of the last decade”. So basically, SNP energy policy is to continue to sell off Scotland’s natural resources to the same companies who were able to steal it in the 70’s while the taxation revenue will continue to flow into our colonising Westminster Government coffers as Scots get advice, yeah that will ward off the cold and high bills this winter.

Seems the Welsh Labour Government, Labour of all parties, have grasped the metal and have taken action, they are looking out for their people. Whereas, appearing before a parliamentary enquiry into Scottish energy Dr Keith Baker, a researcher in fuel poverty and energy policy at Glasgow Caledonian University said: “We have now reached the point where the Scottish Government has had little choice but to licence a significant chunk of some of our most valuable renewable energy assets to a group of multinational companies, none of whom have any real interest in supporting Scotland’s development as an equitable and independent countries, and with two of the top beneficiaries having abysmal records on human rights and climate change,” he said.“If the Scottish Government had listened particularly regarding the need for an asset-owning public energy company and the development of a domestic renewable energy manufacturing sector, we would now be in a position to justifiably claim that the sell off would bring significant and demonstrable economic and social benefits to Scotland.

Wow, that takes a serious level of skill to be as incompetent and stupid on energy policy while allowing your country to be ripped off and stolen from not once, but twice. Don’t believe me look at the evidence for yourselves, listen to Phil Boswell on various Through a Scottish Prism shows, open your minds, your eyes, and your ears.

MACASKILL SLAMS ROBBERY OF SCOTLAND’S ENERGY BOUNTY WHILE HALF OF SCOTS FACE FUEL POVERTY THIS WINTER

So, while the SNP have lied and taken an effective role in what can only be classed as the continued theft of Scotland’s resources only ALBA stands with and for Scotland by offering credible and costed solutions to tackle child and family poverty and to tackle the “Cost of Living crisis”.

It is dreadful to think that the fossil fuel rip-off from the 70s (on-going) is repeating itself and running in parallel with the renewable energy variant of the 2020s.

The oil/gas steal is understandable, if deplorable, given that it was the Britz government doing the pilfering.

The wind give-away is simply down to the incompetence of the Scottish Government, with insult added to injury that the latter is formed by the ‘party of Independence’.

    I am depressed.

I totally agree, we will go down as the mugs of the world. I cannot believe that the SNP Government set a maximum tender for renewables, you can’t f make it up. Bunch of modern-day robber barons and incompetents and yet no outrage from the carrot eaters, pisses me off to be honest. You are right about the oil and gas, although Salmond at the time did also try to raise the issue and was pretty much shut down and the legend of the left Tony Benn was the one who recommended that McCrone be made Top Secret so Scots could never know the true worth of the bounty, Red Tories even then.

The great energy swindle, where private capital makes all the profits, is set to continue for the foreseeable future. The SNP are fully committed to market-driven development of renewable energy. The future is apparently hydrogen which will be eye-wateringly expensive to implement. Indeed if it’s possible at all. The Scottish Government simply does not have the cash to do that, even if it knew where to start. That leaves private capital and likely the “renewed” oil companies. To do that they will need vast amounts of cheap energy, hence the rush to snap up the wind farm licences. You can be sure that the people of Scotland won’t see the benefits.

    • Stuart

We are destined to be ripped off for life, I have no doubt about that. I will check out the link thanks. You are spot on though; SNP policy is clearly ne0-liberal more of the same and worse. Hydrogen will pass us by, and the benefits will end up in the pockets of the wealthy as is the English way and the carrot eaters will keep asking for more. Alba has some policy ideas, but they don’t go far enough either if you ask me, there should be far higher windfall taxes and community benefit bonuses, but it won’t happen will it. We are the mugs of the world.

The publicly-owned energy company was simply to get Her Highness a standing ovation at that year’s conference. It wasn’t really needed after that. Further evidence that she’s really just Tony Blair with mascara.

    • Dave

You are not wrong. I hope the Welsh manage to get one set up and make a ton of cash from it, anything that shows Sturgeon for what she really stands for is fine with me. She is neo-liberal all the way, total sell out. Left of centre progressive my arse. Alba has some ideas, but they don’t go far enough for me either, nothing will ever change unless we can find a leader willing to stand up against corporations and bring about fairness, I don’t think Scots are asking for any more than fairness.

The other downside of having all our energy carried off to English storage facilities is that nothing will be built here. Quite apart from the dearth of jobs and technology around this subject, no advancement in such technology will ever take place in Scotland, though our universities and colleges will still be proving expertise and ideas to this area. It is not enough that our resources are being plundered by global corporations, but our universities and graduates are being exploited, too, and nothing returns to us. What is wrong with the Scots that they put up with this treatment? It’s not just Scots either: rUK migrants into Scotland must see what is happening, yet the majority still think we should be exploited. They must do, if they are prepared to keep on voting against independence as polls show. They should be ashamed of themselves, as should all Scots who are happy to put up with this mass exploitation of resources and people for no benefit whatsoever.

    • lorncal

Colonised cowards for many, fear for others, stupidity and ignorance for the rest. The ability of Scots to take crap always amazes me to be honest, it is disgusting. Independence is about democracy for me, but even the ones that it is about money for them are still happy to see it all stolen away down south as you have noted. Alba has some ideas, but they don’t go far enough for me, I just want to see fairness, fair tax, fair community benefit from our resources. It is not a lot to ask for yet Scots are happy to remain the mugs of the world, total minter.

Hey, Grumpy, we’re not just mugs of the world. we’re world class mugs. The unionists, the ignorant and the docile can be proud of that.

    World Class Mugs!

    World leading dodoes!

    • BR

That is certainly the impression we give to the world isn’t it. It amazes me that people can’t see things for what they are, that they can’t see how much we have been, and continue to be ripped off daily. Scotland could be one of the wealthiest and fairest countries in the world yet look at us. Living in fuel poverty, food poverty, health poverty, educational poverty and for what, to serve our betters because too many are too lazy and ignorant to open their eyes and their minds, it is heartbreaking.
