Something Else to Think About – It is more than just a logo

YES was one of the most striking visual signs during the 2014 Referendum on Scottish Independence. it stood out well, it felt positive, it belonged it seemed to the wider movement and was something that we could all get behind in our campaign. There has been an issue with the logo since 2013 when the SNP started using it without permission from the other members of the YES campaign and movement. The issues I have with the YES logo now is that the SNP have re-designed the logo to something that for me is a vomit inducing mess, and it seems that they also have the copyright on the use of the logo, please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that they grabbed this on the quiet some time ago and certainly click on certain links and you get taken to the SNP shop and website.

Now to some people this will seem like a non-issue but it really isn’t at all. The YES logo represented all of us who want Scottish Independence and who campaigned in a variety of ways during the referendum period, the logo belonged to the movement and to everyone of us. Not only have the SNP taken control, surprise surprise, they have also turned it into what many have described as a pride flag to reflect Sturgeon’s agenda and it is hard to disagree with that feeling when you look at it. Now again, please disagree if I am wrong, but I just don’t and won’t use the YES logo in any future campaign mostly because it is now a mess of a logo but also that the SNP cannot and must not be allowed to lead the campaign and dictate in any shape or form the nature of any campaign.

We will not win any future vote if the SNP are the lead, we just won’t. The only way we win, in my honest opinion, is if any future campaign is led by the YES movement. There will need to be some co-ordination of course of materials, marches, campaign themes, but the strength will continue to lay with the ordinary people who take part, political party members or not, but the wider movement, that is how we win.

The logo will need to be sorted out, if the SNP are not willing to give up their control of it, to revert back to the original design in my opinion, then we need to look for a new logo that the wider movement can get behind, support and use. Something else to think about but the SNP turning it into what many feel is a pride flag, Sturgeon’s MeeToo agenda, GRA and the Hate Crime Bill make any major lead by the SNP in any future campaign difficult at best and impossible for many women to support, and the next campaign will be won by women in my opinion, so we need to make sure that the SNP take on any campaign from their point of view themselves while the YES community lead their own also, by the time we get to Indy2 the SNP will be burden not a help.

  1. I still have the original Yes logo from the Dundee Yes Hub mounted on board outside my house and there it will stay until we are independent – I truly hope I’m not old and carted off into a care home before that happens. I will not be mounting the new SNP woke rainbow inspired sign anywhere on my property.
SNP control of the independence debate needs challenged, they do not own the copyright on Scottish independence although they act like they do and try to control the agenda.
Thank goodness for parties like Alba, of which I am a member, who will step up to the mark and rise to that challenge.

I agree, what they have done to the logo is shocking, it really gets under my skin a lot. The SNP can’t have any role with the YES Community in the next campaign, whenever that is, and if we are going to win it will be the ordinary collective yes community that will do it not the SNP, or even Alba and I am also a member, I think we need to keep the parties separate and go for the ordinary yes folk to carry the cause as I really believe that people like ourselves are the ones to convince others not the politicians.

Totally agree. I will never use the rainbow logo. The ‘old’ logo stood out and could never have been confused with any issue bar independence. Rainbows are very pretty. I have one jumper with lovely rainbow banding and I also have a pair of rainbow earrings. ‘Nuff said!

    • Peeliewallie

I have hated it since they did it but the fact they may have the copyright equally bothers me and tells me a lot about the SNP now. I suspect we will require a new logo because I would not touch the rainbow one, it makes me want to throw up.

    Hi Bruce…

I absolutely Agree with every word you’ve written. The NuSNP rainbow sign is a ‘no no’ as far as I am concerned, too. When it came out, I wasn’t happy with it, didn’t like it, but put it up. When I decided SNP were going in a direction I didn’t like 2/3 years ago, I took it down out of my window, tore it up & threw it in the bin. I cannot thole to even see it. It stands for everything I don’t want for Scotland.

I agree & I have said that to someone just this morning when they said setting up ALBA had split the YES movement. It DIDN’T. As long as we all vote for ‘YES’, it doesn’t matter HOW MANY parties there are! In actual fact, parties are NOT essential in the process. It is Scotgov that has to press the Indy button – and the YES movement will immediately galvanise & get door chapping! Neither SNP nor ALBA are all that essential in the process. But it certainly helps that ALBA have a manifesto, and a plan for the Indy process & Post Indy Scotland. I have had to remind people – SNP/Scotgov have done NO preparation work. NONE AT ALL. But ALBA & other groups such as the SSRG and CommonWeal, and Tim Rideout’s group have been ramping up & getting papers & banking/currency etc. ready so that IndyScotland (sounds so GOOD, doesn’t it!) can hit the road running! We have information we can give the public who haven’t been watching or reading the political pages…

Yep – leave parties out of it, and let ‘YES’ get the show on the road!

I hate the new logo, it is all Sturgeon woke agenda and I will not use it. I also agree it doesn’t matter how many indy parties make up the government the YES agenda doesn’t change and to be honest I would be happy if there were 4 yes parties making up the government, we might then get some good government compared to what we have had the last 5 years which has been failure and increasing poverty and need and the whole indy cause might move forward as it won’t under Sturgeon that is for sure.

The general mantra for such items is to keep it short and simple.

Limit the colours Limit the fonts. Keep any graphic symbols simple and bold. Be aware of the brand associations.

Look at the flags and signs here: https://www.believeinscotland.org/nda-gallery/

My preference is for the plain and simple two-colour one font version – white on blue, or blue on white.

Once you change to other more complex designs you lose impact – especially from a distance. Most of them are unreadable from more than a few feet away, especially if they are not absolutely flat.

I am afraid that the flag that Nicola holds up represents Yes Stonewall and the policies they promote. I do not see that it has any relevance to the campaign for Scottish Independence.

    • Brenda

The original flag was fine and is what we should be using but we are going to need a new logo as you just know Sturgeon and the SNP won’t make any changes but to be honest the SNP and the wider YES community to need to keep their distance from each other, the SNP will be a liability if they are allowed to lead, if we are to become independence then it will come from the people on the ground convincing others not the politicians in my opinion.

so, can those wanting non political YES flag adopt a particular blue & white YES saltire flag and, if so, which one?

  7. larawanda2004 says:

Totally agree Bruce. The SNP I.E. Murrell was giving away the rainbow YES badges as they were old stock you could have a choice of different emblems, I.E flags ect., but there seemed to be a glut of the rainbow badges maybe another ploy by the Sturgeon camp, unknown to us what lay ahead. GRA and the rest of her cult movements.

    • Lara

Sturgeon has ruined it to the extent we can’t use it and if they have the copyright then they won’t allow it anyway. I really despise the SNP and Sturgeon now I really do.
