Something Different: the new Scottish Football Season

Here we are at that time of the year again when the Scottish Leagues get ready to kick off tomorrow. I appreciate that most of you will not have any interest whatsoever in what will unfold, and while I don’t go to many games these days Dundee FC  remain my team. Anyway below is what I have predicted for the final table for next season.

I’m afraid I suspect that Celtic (1st) will win the league again this season, it may well be closer than previous years, but I just think they will be too strong for the rest. Celtic have by far the best squad in Scottish Football and millions to spend that others just don’t have.  I think Rangers (2nd) will be stronger, wither Steven Gerrard turns out to be a good manager or not remains to be seen but they look a little stronger than last year and will be very difficult to take points from.

I think that Hibs will have a good season (3rd). They have a good squad and barring injuries might even put real pressure on Celtic and Rangers, Neil Lennon has shown himself to be a decent manager so Hibs could be the surprise package this season. Aberdeen (4th) will be top 6 but they have been caught up by Rangers and Hibs now. They did well against Burnley and certainly no shame of being put out of Europe by them last night but I just think that they will find it harder. If they did manage to finish runners up again then hats off to them but can’t see it.

Hearts (5th) have signed an awful lot of new players and moved on a lot also. Not sure how that will effect them but looking at their squad you would be surprised if they finish any worse than 5th. I have went Motherwell (6th), they haven’t made lot’s of signings but have a solid squad and a good manager so I think they will improve on 7th from last season. Kilmarnock (7th), Steve Clarke did so well last season and I expect them to do ok this season to the extent that they will be safe, difficult to beat. They have moved a few players on but haven’t really replaced them so their 5th of last season I can’t see them repeating. St. Johnstone (8th), another team with a good manager but they have been slowly slipping back year on year. A few changes to their squad and signing Tony Watt if it works will be a great signing but overall I think they will be fine and safe but that’s about it.

Dundee (9th), I am still not convinced by Neil McCann to be honest. Last year they had a real struggle to stay up and I suspect it will be the same this year to be honest. Very lightweight at times and real problems scoring goals. They have made a few signings, Jack Hamilton from Hearts being the only one I knew but from the pre season games I have attended they still look like it’s going to be a long season and they need to hope that Paul McGowan stays fit and Craig Wighton starts to really show his undoubted talent and ability but I think we are in a relegation battle.

St Mirren (10th), lost their manager and appointed Alan Stubbs. Huge turnover in their squad and only time will tell if they are good enough. I think they will stay up but will be in the battle with Dundee. Stubbs I am not sure about, he has a very mixed record overall and may be tempted to make a lot of changes from the way they played last season. Hamilton (11th) I just think they are in for a struggle this season and may well go down via the play offs. Have made a few signings and moved people on but they just look weak overall to me. Livingstone (12th), going down I think. They did well to come up but if Dundee Utd hadn’t lost the plot in the play offs they would have come up as by far the better team in my opinion. New untested Manager in Kenny Miller who comes across as being full of it. They have made a few signings but I just don’t see them doing anything at all.

Scottish Championship Winners Partick Thistle Playoffs Ross County, Dunfermline and Dundee Utd.

Scottish League One Winners Raith Rovers Playoffs Airdrie, Arbroath, Dumbarton.

Scottish League Two Winners Peterhead Playoffs Cowdenbeath, Clyde and Berwick.

So just my predictions, no doubt well off the mark in any case but I will need to try and remember and check these at the end of the season.

Interesting choice , Celtic look favourites , but last year a poor Rangers side came within 3 points of Celtic before things went pear shape . It might be nip and tuck this year , I expect the title to go to the wire with Celtic just edging it , I hope I’m wrong though. I agree on Hibs , Lennon is a good manager , but his touchline antics could be Hibs undoing , but 3rd it is . Aberdeen haven’t really strengthened , and lost Christie back to Celtic , but 4th is about right . Now Hearts , Killie and Motherwell are an interesting bunch , Hearts have brought in 10 new players ,and looked good against Inverness last week , but its Hearts and their bottle goes ,so its a 6th place for me . Last year Steve Clark worked miracles at Killie , but if that happens again , then a Championship side down south will come asking around November/December and he’ll be off and Killie will finish 7th . Motherwell right now have a lot of injuries ,and just lost a centre half , but they had 2 finals last year and they are a bugger to play against so a surprising 5th for me . That leaves Hamiltion , Livi , St Mirren , St Johnstone an your Dundee . For me Hamilton will go , they are a declining outfit and have stayed up by luck , St Mirren for the play off place , Alan Stubbs will have them organised , but a lack of quality will see them struggle . Livi next , my local team , with Kenny Miller in charge , this could be interesting ,because they have a secret weapon in Ryan Hardie . If he gets service he will score a barrel load , for me Livi finish 10th . St Johnstone and Dundee have very little to split them , but Tony Watt at St.Johnstone could swing a few games their way so 8th for them and 9th for Neil McCann and his blues .
This season I expect Falkirk to be in the running for promotion , but Ross County or Inverness for me in the Championship .
Cup competitions , Hibs to win the league cup , Rangers to win the Scottish cup .

Good shout, no doubt there will be a surprise or two but in Scottish Football you never know where they will come from. I really can’t see past Celtic but I would love someone to challenge them. I do think that if Hibs got the rub of the green, maintained form and injury free they could do a Dundee Utd from the 80’s as I really rate Lennon.
